Whale Watching

Hermanus is the best land based whale watching destination on earth.  From July to December Southern Right Whales can be spotted all along the coastline.  For an even closer view of the whales a trip can also be booked on one of the whale watching boats.  In addition to Southern Right Whales you may also spot Bryde’s and Humpback Whales.

Hemel en Aarde Wine Route

A short drive from town on the R320 Hemel-en-Aarde road you will find 15 wine farms in a picturesque valley.  This is South Africa’s premium cool climate wine region and here you will be able to sample some of our country’s best Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz varieties.  Even if you don’t enjoy wine a trip up the valley is worthwhile in order to enjoy the beautiful scenery, breathtaking views and top class restaurants.

Hermanus Cliffpath

The cliffpath meanders for 11km all along the rugged coastline from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach.  The is a fantastic way to explore the scenic coastline and the beautiful beaches along the way. You will get some exercise, breath in the “Champagne Air” of Hermanus and spot a couple of whales during the whale season.  This is an experience not to be missed.

Hiking in Fernkloof

No trip to Hermanus is complete without a hiking trip in the Fernkloof Nature reserve.  There are over 60km of trails in the 18 square kilometres of the reserve.  The views from the mountains are spectacular.  During your hike you will see the beautiful fynbos that is unique to the Western Cape.  More that 2500 plant species have been identified in the reserve.  There is no other place on earth with so many different species in such close proximity.

If you are in Hermanus on a Saturday morning you will be lucky enough to visit the Country Market between 09H00 and 13H00.  You can sample some of the local delicasies, enjoy a drink and listen to live music.  There are also many other things to buy and your wife will love you for taking her there.  Whilst she is busy shopping you will be able to drink a local craft beer and sample some of the local food.  There is a play area to keep the kids entertained.
